E3 Quick Play: Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster

E3 2011: Hands on with the cookie monster
E3 Quick Play: Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster. Gaming, Dad, kids games, sesame street, xbox 360, Microsoft kinect, e32011, Warner bros, microsoft, Quick play, 0

Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster sees the monsters of Sesame Street head to your computer. But is it as scary as it sounds, is it just another kids TV show cash it, or are you and your kids going to get some reward out of it somehow? We caught up with the game at this year’s gaming expo E3 in Los Angeles to find out more about the new game that should be coming to an Xbox 360 console near you this Christmas.

Read on to find out how we got on:

Name

Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster

What platform is it on?

Xbox 360

When's it due out?

Christmas 2011

What other game is it like?

Any kids game you’ve played as far as the characters go, Kinect Adventures as far as the jumping around bit goes

Does it use any new tech like 3D, PlayStation Move, or?Kinect for Xbox 360?

Yep – Kinect for Xbox 360

The pitch

Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster is an uplifting and funny, family adventure game playable on Kinect for Xbox 360.?Players join favourite Sesame Street characters Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar, Grover and all new characters as they discover a long lost children’s book titled Once Upon a Monster. It features active co-op gameplay that is specially designed for sibling and/or parent-child co-play; and teaches social, emotional, and other important life lessons through its colorful and whimsical gameplay.

The storyline

As they read, they join the action to become part of a living storybook adventure, helping new monster friends with their problems by exploring the book chapter by chapter, page by page.

Trailers, demoes, and video

Our first impressions

Gaming doesn’t always have to be about shooting things, or driving fast. In fact that’s exactly what Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster isn’t about.

The idea is that you play with your own “little monster” waving your arms around and completing the different tasks at hand so you get to feel like a parent that’s spending quality time with your kids and yet still play video games and earn achievement points to prove you’ve got it.

There are a range of different mini games to play and we played a copy cat level where you have to follow the actions that Elmo and Cookie monster do on screen, as well as one that involved you having to collect glow worms flying around within a set time.

Because it’s aimed at fat dads and kids the level we played was fairly forgiving and it whisks you through the level allowing you plenty of “high five” moments with you daughter or son.

Sadly in the boozy nightclub, come Xbox party, where we got to have a play there were no kids to “high five” but a random booth babe sufficed. Natch.

The graphics are cute, the mini games fun, and overall it’s a really enjoyable family experience if not a little American and a little saccharin at times, but hey that’s Sesame Street through and through.

If you’re looking for something very kid focused and friendly this will be one to replace Kinectanimals.

Please note

The E3 games convention is a fantastic chance to see the latest games due out over the coming year, as well as, letting us get a glimpse into what is going to be the big titles and the ones to avoid like the plague.

The big problem however is that for most of the titles that glimpse is, well, just that. At the show you'll get to play a level here or a multiplayer map there or even have a product manager walk you through a specific level.

So with that in mind we present you with our Quick Play.

What we've done is broken down the key facts you need to know and then given you our first impressions based on around 15 minutes of?gaming. For us that 15 minutes isn't enough to do a First Look review or even a review. How can you rate a game that offers over 30 hours of gaming on just 15 minutes of play? However it should hopefully give you an idea, a feeling, a notion, of what to expect come launch day.

Social Network goes VoIPy
Facebook dials in Skype video calling

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the arrival of video chat, powered by Skype, into the social network.

Speaking via a stream that was broadcast on the Facebook Live channel, Zuckerberg's announcement was actually later than Facebook and Skype publishing the details on their respective blogs, such is Zuck's tendency to waffle on about graphs, trends and the like (he loves a good graph that boy).

Video calling will be available from within Facebook on your browser and Skype claims that it represents its "first big step on the Web".

The Skype video calling is embedded right into Facebook's UI and is an optimised version of the popular VoIP software.

There's no need to have Skype installed on your PC - simply sign into your Facebook chat and select call to video conference with your contacts straight away. It will need to download and install a plug-in first, but this is automatic and simple. You can even leave video messages if your pals aren't around to answer if you're calling them from within Skype (which already has Facebook chat integration).

And the best news is that video calling from Skype and Facebook is available now from?www.facebook.com/videocalling.

As well as the video calling addition, Facebook has also added group chat and a new layout so the friends you chat with the most often are more prominent.

With Google+ offering group video chatting with Hangouts and mobile group chatting with Huddle - Facebook's announcement may have come a week too late... but it'll still be useful nevertheless; after all Google has a long way to go before it matches Facebook's 750 million users.

10 ways to enhance Google+
[info]aaronblong

Best Chrome extensions and tweaks around
10 ways to enhance Google+

You’ve got Google+, you’re enjoying it, but you want it to be better. We hear you, and so does the developer community that have already started creating Google Chrome extensions and other ways to enhance what Google+ offers.

We don’t suspect this is the last of what will be made available, and we also don’t expect you’ll want to install all of them, but still, while some are fun add-ons, others are must have installs. Here are our favourite 10.?

Surplus

Surplus is a Chrome extension that once installed is a small icon that will sit next to your address bar and tell you how many notifications you have waiting.

But it’s not just an “unread count”, pressing on the icon lets you see your latest notifications and lets you share with your Google+ circles straight from the drop down box. You can manage which circles you share to, add images, video, and links, and basically do everything that you would do from the share box within Google+. Very clever.

The only thing it’s missing is a Google+ this page button, that would let you share the page you were on without having to cut and paste the link, and the ability to Twitter or Facebook at the same time. We’ve put in those requests to the developers already.

UPDATE: Looks like they heard us and have added automatic page share to the extension.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pfphgaimeghgekhncbkfblhdhfaiaipf

+Photo Zoom

+Photo Zoom is a simple extension providing fast and simple zooming for photos within your Google+ Stream and ideal if you’re struggling without your glasses.

?

Once installed all you have to do is hover over an image in your stream, and hey presto it’s considerably larger allowing you to see it without having to click on it. It’s really clever and a must have if the people you follow are always posting images. Especially small images.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/njoglkofocgopmdfjnbifnicbickbola#

Extended Share for Google Plus

One of the biggest wants from those that are already using Google Plus is that they’ve already got Twitter and Facebook accounts, and therefore the chore of now keeping all three running at the same time is a burden. It’s a tough life we know, but Extended Share for Google Plus goes someway to trying to solve that problem.

We’ve personally had mixed results with this Chrome extension, but the idea is that it will let you share your Google+ updates with Twitter and Facebook at the press of a button.

Until Google opens up Google+ to developers properly, this is the best you are going to get for the time being.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/oenpjldbckebacipkfbcoppmiflglnib

Tweets +1

This is reverse Google+ enhancing. Install this extension and when you go to Twitter.com you’ll be able to +1 tweets you see thanks to a new icon that appears on the page next to tweets.

It’s quick, simple, and easy to use, as long as you use Twitter.com. This doesn't obviously help you if you use a dedicated Twitter client like Twitter for Mac or Twitter for PC.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/iajlbgpookhcamopbfofhlamllbpmfep?hl=en#

Notification Count for Google Plus

If you aren’t fussed about sharing content from an extension like Surplus, then Notification Count for Google Plus is more for you. It’s a simple icon that lets you know how many notifications you’ve got in Google+ waiting for you.

Nothing more, nothing less, but a bit redundant when compared to Surplus.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ehcjeejpbinpibjicmpcdeenfmehlpjk#

+1 Button

If you’re using Google+, chances are you’re also using Google +1 and this is an extension that allows you to quickly +1 any page on the web.?

Once installed a new +1 icon will appear at the end of your address bar allowing you to plus one the page in question without having to try and find a plus one button on the page itself.

Those plus ones will appear in your Google+ account for all to see.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kmonhedbcpagbphilnoajiencllnpoii

Google Plus bar colour changer extension

Not an official Chrome extension, but nonetheless handy if it’s your thing. What does the Google Plus bar colour changer extension do exactly? Well it lets you change the colour of the black bar in Google+ to a different colour like blue, green, or pink.

Yep, completely pointless you might say, but still if you find yourself having a massive aversion to the black bar this will be the one for you.

http://www.rioleo.org/google-plus-bar-color-changer-extension.php

Google + Facebook

If you’re feeling remorse for leaving Facebook and going Google+ there is a way to deal with your bad feelings and that’s to make Google+ look like Facebook.

Some, of course, will say that it already does, but that’s nothing compared to what they will say to this custom makeover that you can install with a bit of Chrome jiggery-pokery.

The finished result is a Google+ interface that looks like it’s actually Facebook. We wonder if Google+ user Mark Zuckerberg is running it so people in the office can’t tell he’s using the new competing service?

http://userstyles.org/styles/50051/google-facebook

SyncPad For Google+

If you’re a fan of SyncPad, an app described by the company as a "Facetime for drawings” then you’ll be pleased to know that you can get it as an extension for both Chrome and Safari, allowing you to add it to Hangouts which will enable you to share your drawing skills with others in your circles.

http://blog.mysyncpad.com/post/7263433230/introducing-syncpad-extensions-for-google

Liquid G+

If the thought of having to scroll down the page to see what your friends are saying is too much, Liquid G+ will take that single column style and give you three columns instead.

Why? We aren’t sure. But like the Google to Facebook hack this changes the appearance of your Google+ page as long as you are happy to do some tweaking with code. Not one for the quick press of a button and we can’t personally see why you would want it, but someone must have because someone built it in the first place.

E3 Quick Play: Fable: The Journey
[info]aaronblong

E3 2011: Walkthrough of what to expect
E3 Quick Play: Fable: The Journey. E32011, Gaming, Microsoft, Xbox 360, Fable The Journey, Microsoft Kinect, quick play 0

The next Fable has been announced, but before you run to play Fable 3 again in?preparation, it's not Fable 4. This time Molynuex and the gang have turned to the Kinect sensor for the Xbox 360, creating a game that?exists?in the Fable world but doesn't feature any of the characters. But does that work? Will you want to play it? And what's all this fuss about the new game being "on rails". We find out.

Name

Fable: The Journey

What platform is it on?

Xbox 360

When's it due out?

2012

What other game is it like?

Fable series

Does it use any new tech like 3D, PlayStation Move, or?Kinect for Xbox 360?

Yes – the Kinect

The pitch

Fable: The Journey is poised to take the cherished action-adventure series to Kinect for Xbox 360. Under Microsoft's licensing agreement with Epic, Lionhead is equipped with the latest Unreal Engine technology to bring powerful new experiences to the critically acclaimed Xbox 360 exclusive franchise that has sold more than 9 million copies.

The storyline

Back in Albion Fable: The Journey follows a different path to the one in the Fable games, however exists in the same environment. Set soon after the events of?Fable 3,?The Journey?puts players in control of a new hero who has just come upon Theresa; the blind fortune teller featured prominently in the?Fable series. Tasked with bringing Theresa to the Spire, our hero will have to venture through an Albion that will feel somewhat familiar.

Trailers, demoes, and video

Our first impressions

We enjoyed two outings of Fable: The Journey across the course of E3 in Los Angeles.?First at the Microsoft press conference at the start of the week at the E3 gaming convention, and then again in a behind closed doors session with Peter Molyneux himself.

Between the two we’ve managed to get a good grasp of the game, seeing different elements and grilling Molyneux at the same time.

What we do know is that the game will be a complete Kinect experience when it hits the shops some time in 2012, and that you won't need to use the controller at all.

“In the past Fable has been about walking, jogging or running,” Molyneux explains to Pocket-lint. “This time you can play the game entirely sitting down.”

Worried that driving around Albion in a car wouldn’t a) fit in and b) involve you having to hold your hands out in front of you – something that would be tiring, you’ll play a gypsy riding a horse and caravan with you arms controlling the reigns of the horse to move forwards, faster, slower, left and right.?Pull the reigns up and your horse will move forward, to the right it moves in that direction, and so forth just like driving a real horse. Molyneux tells us whips will be available at a later stage in the game (moral choices and all that).

But it's not just about moving your arms. Molyneux is hoping to include voice control as well so you’ll be able to “click click” or “whooo boy” your horse ditching the arm controls altogether.

Why’s all this important, well from what we can gather it’s going to be the main stay of the game with you riding around in your caravan breaking?occasionally?to interact with things on the side of the road.

The game focuses around life-force Molyneux explains. Everything has life force and you can take it from creatures, animals, people, pretty much anything in the game. Take too much and they die bringing in a moral choice that we’ve seen in previous Molyneux games.

“It’s not on rails,” Molyneux affirms. “You’ll be chased, you’ll chase.”

That said we immediately go into an area on rails (a pre glide path that sees the game push you along into the action like you are on a train track rather than free movement as in previous Fable games) to take on a group of ghouls. It’s a chance to show off the magic element of Fable: The Journey.

Magic can be wielded with one hand, or both, and depending on your hand movements will depend on what magic you can create and how it is cast. Holding your hands together lets you create the magic and depending on what you do with your hands thereafter will depend on what happens on screen.

We see magic being squished together to create stronger magic, as well as something Molyneux refers to as Creation magic that lets you create shields, spears, fishing rods, and even a telescope. It's magical for the lack of a better word.

Sadly we were only treated to seeing the magic used for the shield and spear elements in our demos, but you get the sense that you'll really feel like a magician casting your spells and setting them off on their short journeys.?

Trying to drive home the fact that Fable: The Journey isn’t about a rails game on foot, Molyneux again tells us that “There isn’t many times when you are on foot.”

It’s something that we are going to have to take with a pinch of salt for that’s all we’ve seen, but other titbits to note is that it's the same team that developed the now halted Milo and Kate venture demoed for Kinect last year and not the Fable 3 team. That means plenty of emotional tugs on the heart strings no doubt and something more than Molyneux has been able to show us in our 15 minute demo.

As to why it’s not called Fable 4? According to Molyneux he didn’t want to be bound by the Fable world. This route allows him to enjoy its surroundings without having to worry about the characters from the previous games or the affecting the storyline.

Our time as always was brief and from what we’ve seen we are really sure what to make of Fable: The Journey. If the walking elements are on the infrequent side then that means a lot of staring at a horse’s arse and we are sure that’s a game we want to play either.

What is clear is that it’s typical bold stuff from the creator of classics like Black and White and the original Fable series and it will be interesting to see how Fable: The Journey develops over the coming months. This is one game where the verdict is still very much out.

Fable: The Journey is out some time in 2012.

Next Tuesday 16 bulletins addressing 34 vulnerabilities!
[info]aaronblong

Advance Notification Service information on 16 bulletins (nine Critical in severity, seven Important) addressing 34 vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, .NET, SQL, Visual Studios, Silverlight and ISA. All bulletins will be released on Tuesday, June 14, at approximately 10am PDT. Come back to this blog on Tuesday for our official risk and impact analysis, along with deployment guidance and a video overview of the release.

One of the issues we start to address in this release is ?cookiejacking,? which allows an attacker to steal cookies from a user?s computer and access websites the user has logged into. The Internet Explorer bulletin will address one of the known vectors to the cookie folder. Given the prevalence of other types of social engineering methods in use by criminals, which provide access to much more than cookies, we believe this issue poses lower risk to customers. Further, based on a signature that has been released to millions of Microsoft Security Essentials and Forefront customers, the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) has not detected attempts to use this technique.

The Story Of The Mechanical Padre
[info]aaronblong
Radiolab has an excellent story about one of the most fascinating clockwork automatons ever made, a 15-inch high figure of a well-known miraculous monk, San Diego de Alcalá. The story is a bit apocryphal but the gist is this: the son of the King of Spain, Don Carlos, fell down a set of stairs in 1562 and fell into a deep illness due to his injuries. The King prayed to God, asking for his son to be spared with a miracle and promising a miracle in return. In a few days the boy began to heal and in the end he was perfectly fine. The King then commissioned this monk as a celebration of prayer, piety, and faith.

Lomography La Sardina hands-on
[info]aaronblong

Catch of the day for analogue shutterbugs
Lomography La Sardina hands-on

The Lomography La Sardina is the latest camera to join the lineup from the analogue specialist, and is shaped like a sardine tin. Yes, a sardine tin. We were invited along to Lomo HQ for a sneaky peek at the new model.

Along with comically distinctive styling, the La Sardina also sports a super-wide 22mm lens, along with a flash that sports three different settings - a first for a Lomo camera. Unlike the Lomo Diana version, the new camera's flash can be set to low for close-ups, and also includes medium and high settings for mid-range and long-range shooting, with the top setting being a lot more powerful than anything currently offered by the manufacturer. The new camera also enables you to wind film backwards and forward, as on the brand's Sprocket Rocket model.

The camera's protruding lens can be twisted into the camera body so that it sticks out less, making it more compact, although you'll need to pull it back out again before shooting.

There are four versions available. Two of the models include a flash (Fischers Fritze and El Capitan), priced at ?89, while the models without a flash (Sea Pride and Marathon) have an affordable price tag of just ?49 each.

The La Sardina uses conventional 35mm film and produces normal full frame shots, albeit with a wide-angle so that you can pack as much into each shot as possible. What's more, as there are no unusual formats involved, you should be able to get your pictures developed at most high street processing shops. The new model also sports a 1:8 aperture, along with a focussing range of 0.6m - infinity. Along with a standard tripod socket, the camera also comes with a shutter release cable, while the flash is kitted out with yellow, red and blue removable filters for adding some colour to your shots.

Despite clearly taking most of its design cues from sardine tins, the odd shape is actually based on old 1930s snapper made by the Irwin Corporation, known as the Kandor Candid. Without the flash, the new camera is pretty compact, and feels very comfortable in the hand although the flash certainly adds some extra bulk and weight. However, the ability to be able to wind the lens in slightly is a nice touch to make it just a little more compact.

It's hard not to be won over by the quirky nautical theme, but the camera also represents an affordable point and shoot wide-angle option for beginners, while the tweakable flash is also something of a boon and should mean no more overlit, washed-out close-ups. Stay tuned for a full review.
